#65 – Being Patient To Get What You Want
A hunt for an office space turned to a life lesson on patience.
#00:00:14-5# Hey guys, Stephen Esketzis here from Marketing On The Move. Today I want to talk to you guys a little bit about patience. This is something which I have run into a fair few times, recently run into as well. Dealing with being patient, dealing with getting what you want if you are patient. This is something I want to bring up with you guys in the podcast and give you a little bit of my experience with having patience and how you guys can implement the same sort of patience in your own business.
#00:00:44-2# The one thing with entrepreneurs is, and I think this is with all of us, is that we are not super patient. All of us want to get somewhere faster, quicker, better, stronger, the whole lot. We do not want to wait around for the results. We all want quick results we want fast results. The thing is all of us, in pretty much every business, whatever we plan out, whatever the business plan is, it usually takes about ten times longer with ten times more hurdles. No matter what the business plan is. They always take longer, but at the end of the day, the ones that do take longer and the ones you come out on the other side of are usually the successes.
#00:01:21-7# That is what I want to talk to guys a bit about today. I was looking for an office space recently. If you guys have been following me on Snapchat, stephenezketsis, all one word — if you have been following me on Snapchat you will have realized that I have been on a bit of an office space hunt, looking at a few different spaces, trying to figure out what is available. Our last place ended up not being a good fit. The landlord wanted a longer commitment, the place was run down, had a few issues; it just was not for us.
#00:01:50-9# What that led us to was looking for a new place, somewhere a bit fresher, somewhere a bit better, and we were happy to pay a bit more, but we wanted something better. We were on this hunt, we were looking around, we were on the website of a commercial office website, we were looking around on the listings every single day. There has been another guy in the room, so we were sharing just an office — an actual room like a suite. We have been looking for this room for a really long time, and we could not find anything for about — I am really impatient with this, so for me, a really long time is about a week and a half. I have been working from home for a week and a half since we left the old office. Now we were just looking and looking and looking, and we could not find anything. One thing with us was I needed somewhere with a car park, I wanted somewhere with natural light, I wanted somewhere with a good Internet connection. There are about five or six things that we needed to have in this new place, and it all needed to fit in within our budget.
#00:02:46-0# It was interesting. We went through, and we found all these different places, all these different offices, and there was always something wrong with them. The pricing was a bit outside our budget, there was not enough parking, the room was a little bit too small. There was always something just a little wrong with them, and I could not put my finger on one that I really liked.
#00:03:07-0# But at the end of the day I hated working from home. I despised it, I just could not work, I could not focus. There were just too many distractions. I needed somewhere to separate the work, the home office from the workspace. Pretty much, we were looking. The guy I moved in with, he already had space at the moment. He was in another office, and he was listed and ended up three or four weeks after mine did so he actually had a lot of time to work while I was looking and I was working from home. I was trying to find all these places where I could just move in just straight away and not have to worry about it. I was looking and looking and looking, and they all had something a little bit wrong with them. All a bit too expensive as well and you would not get — they would really be a nice place, but they would be double almost what I was getting the last time for a half a size. I do not know; it just did not click.
#00:03:58-9# At the end of it all, I really kept forcing his hand, and I was like, we have to find something, start looking at me, start pushing it. I was very close to committing to space, which I did not love but I was just going to deal with, and the reason that I was just going to deal with it is because I hated the alternative. However I remained patient for a little while, I kept telling myself just keep looking you will find something. That is what he told me as well, keep looking, you will find something, we will find something that we both really like, a space that fits all our needs, that has everything there for us.
#00:04:30-5# Lo and behold, we actually did find something, which was really cool. We found something, which we really love in a spot that is really close to us, a place that has ridiculously fast Internet, really clean, the whole nine yards. Everything we needed and more for cheaper than what we had at the previous place. It was perfect, absolutely perfect.
#00:04:55-3# We just got in here now, we moved in last week. It just hit me that I could have ended up with somewhere really sh*t, with nothing available, where you have to pay more for the internet, you have to pay more for this, pay more for that, cleaning fees, kitchen fees, when all we really need is the Internet and a desk then we are good to go. But we got somewhere awesome and we are paying less than we got before for double space and ten times better amenities and facilities and everything like that in a great position. The whole lot.
#00:05:24-6# I just wonder sometimes that it really pays to be, not decisive, I think it is that sort of balance of decisiveness and patience. You have to find yourself when you are making choices, there is a time to be patient when you need to keep looking, you need to take everything in and start realizing what is available. Don’t just be rash.
#00:05:46-1# The difference between being rash and decisive and being patient and just taking too long — I got a lesson from that. Do I need to be decisive more often or do I need to be patient more often? I think the problem is that you just need to be one or the other at the right time. It is not being one or the other all the time. It is decisive and patient at the right times. That was one little lesson I learned from this little experience I had for about a month and a half.
#00:06:15-6# You need to be decisive at the right time. In my business for example, if I have a problem or I see something that is not performing and I need a software to fix that — for example, if I am looking for a plugin, or a live chat software, or a SaaS company to help me out with a landing page or something like that. That is not something which I can be patient on. I cannot wait around all day and say this feature, this one does mobile opt-ins, this one does drag and draw, blah blah blah. These are things that will be a detriment to your business, so that is just wasting time but if you are actually decisive, and you take action on that, that is when you get to reap a lot of your profits. This is because a lot of people are wasting time deciding what is better, what is worse, how do I do it, what is the best way of doing it, do I follow this guy, do I follow that guy.
#00:07:00-1# That is just wasting time. That is when you need to realize that if you want to be successful and actually grow your business and do it fast and actually be a doer and not a goner, do not waste your time going through the motions, and doing some reading like all these handbooks and this and that. Be decisive. They are the times to be decisive.
#00:07:19-5# With patience, always be patient on the bigger decisions that are going to affect you a bit long term. I think that is how I am going to look at it from now on. When do I have to be patient, is this something that is going to solve a business problem, is this costing me money, how much will this affect my business in the long term. They are the ones that you have to be a little patient on and really decide on or really evaluate or if it is something you can finally work with. You have to have a little bit of gut feeling as well; I understand that, but you just have to be really aware that decisiveness and patience have to work hand in hand for any successful business. It is just a matter of choosing the right time to use them.
#00:07:57-1# I am now, ironically with the new office, I am driving to the new office and stuck in traffic. Traffic that I was not stuck in last time. I guess there are pros and cons to it all, but at the end of the day, I am really happy with what we got.
#00:08:10-9# Hopefully you guys have been enjoying the previous episodes. This one is sort of a bit of a life lesson, a little bit of a one-on-one with me. We had a couple of really good interviews on lately. We have a few more in the future.
#00:08:22-6# I am going to be heading off to the Click Funnels Event next week so funnel hacks, that one is going to be going on. I might be able actually even to do a podcast from there. I would love to do that. If I get the opportunity, I will definitely pull out a microphone or get the phone out and start recording. I know Max Lemos is going to be presenting along with a whole lot of other awesome speakers. I am really looking forward to flying out there and being able to see everyone and catch up with some of the Click Funnels crew and other funnel hackers and things like that. It is going to be amazing. I know there will be some really big dogs in the room. It is going to be really exciting guys, if you are there, make sure you message me. I would love to catch up with you. I am going to be there with as a staff as well, so if you want to message me and have a chat, I will be handing out badges and things at the beginning, and talking all things funnel. Catch up with me there.
#00:09:12-5# If you have any questions or want me to talk about anything specific, please let me know. I have been doing a lot of Snapchatting lately. It seems to be doing pretty well, but I need to keep doing the podcast. So I will try to do them as regularly as possible so make sure you force my hand on those. We had an awesome one recently; I know you guys listened to Facebook advertising. That one was awesome. Yes, she absolutely killed it. I loved some of the answers she had then, things I will be implementing and passing on to my advertisers as well that do the traffic. I highly recommend that guy.
#00:09:46-3# Otherwise I will speak to you shortly. I will be recording some more videos and things coming out really soon, but until then take care and have an awesome day.
