How Tom Evans became successful with his Vacuum Cleaners Business

How did you get into selling vacuum cleaners?

I did not complete much of school since my younger years and I started off working various odd jobs during my teens. I started off waiting tables, cleaning cars, car sales and also did a year with a big organisation selling vacuum cleaners.

During the year stint selling vacuum cleaners, I got to know quite a bit about the various vacuum cleaners. I found out what are the things people are looking for when buying a vacuum cleaner, what are the functions offered by the different brands of vacuum cleaners and of course how to sell them well.

After a year, I decided to fire 2 (1)my boss and setup my own online store, selling products from Amazon. I am a firm believer of Amazon as they have probably one of the most successful online platforms that allow consumers to have seamless purchase and a one-stop delivery.

How does your business operate day-to-day?

My business model is a simple one. Being an online store, there is no physical inventory. All business programs are run by my website which is totally managed by a hosting company. I prefer that consumers find my website through the major search engines as I believe this is what they want.

I do make sure that my prices posted on my websites are exactly what are listed in conjunction with Amazon’s.

What has been the biggest difficulty in the business in 2014?

As my website primarily focuses on traffic from search engines, the business model has seen a lot of ups and downs depending on how the search engines rank my site. During bad times, I can see a drop of more than 60% of traffic volume and 50% of sales. Such figures are very damaging to my business.

Looking back, I find that there is a need to shift focus into other traffic sources. It is the same as any traditional business. You need a steady stream of consumers from various mediums in order to get more business.

Where do you see the vacuum cleaner industry going in 2015, and where do you see your company heading?

I think that vacuum cleaners will always be in demand, as it has always been in the past years. Being a household necessity appliance, there will always be people looking to upgrade their existing vacuum cleaner or change their spoilt ones. And with many new products emerging from the market, it leaves consumers spoilt for choice.

I think VacuumHub.com will still be a leading vacuum cleaner company, focussing on providing consumers with only the best vacuum cleaners out in the market.

If you could leave our readers with one last piece of business advice, what would it be?

Having a business is easy. You need passion and the drive to make it work for you. Besides having the passion for your business, you need to ensure that the products and services provided are of the best. Customer retention is just as important.
